Tars Tarkas is Jeddak of the Thark, the largest, oldest clans the green men of Barsoom. He is best known for giving the hero John Carter his battle name, Dotar Sojat, 'my right arms'. Tars is a formidable warrior, a crafty hunter, a shrewd statesman, and a true leader. He may appear gruff, unafraid of casual violence, but he has a huge heart. If he perceives an injustice, he will not hesitate to intervene, to defend someone he considers to be defenseless. Everything he does, he does with passion and conviction, and his people trust and respect him.

The Thark are twelve-foot-tall, four-armed, green-skinned sentients with huge tusks. Despite the lesser gravity of Barsoom, the magical effects of the Bar will allow Tars to function as if his strength was acquired in normal gravity. When he speaks, he sounds strangely like Willem Dafoe.
